The word "beatitude" derives from the Latin word "beatus", meaning "blessed". The Biblical passage most commonly referred to as the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-11) derives its name from the fact that, in those verses (which occurred at the beginning of Jesus' lengthy discourse that is commonly referred to as "the Sermon on the Mount"), Jesus spoke of multiple spiritual benefits (that is, blessings) that would be given by God to individuals who displayed various actions or traits of character (such as humility, mercy, and spiritual purity) indicating that they were following God's guidance and will for their lives.
