Why would Jesus imply that he was greater than the Queen of Sheba, greater than Solomon the King, etc., in Matthew 12?

In Matthew 12:41-42, Jesus calls himself greater than Solomon and Jonah to highlight his divine authority, messianic identity, and superior wisdom, rebuke the Pharisees' unbelief, and warn that Gentile believers (like the Queen of Sheba) will judge faithless Israel. He asserts his presence brings a greater, ultimate revelation.

Some key reasons for these comparisons in Matthew 12 include:

Superior Wisdom & Authority:

While Solomon was known for God-given wisdom, Jesus is the embodiment of divine wisdom itself. He is greater than the Temple and the prophets.

Rebuke of Unbelief:

Jesus contrasts the Queen of Sheba—a Gentile who travelled far to hear Solomon—with the people of his day who refuse to listen to him, even though he is "something greater than Solomon".

Future Judgment:

Jesus notes that the Queen of the South (Sheba) and the men of Nineveh will rise at the final judgment to condemn that generation for rejecting the Messiah.

Fulfilled Prophecy:

Jesus implies he is the ultimate King of Israel, surpassing all previous leaders, including David and Solomon.

Presence of God:

By stating he is greater than the Temple, Jesus indicates that the actual presence of God is found in him, not just in the physical building in Jerusalem.

This comparison is part of a broader series of "greater than" statements in Matthew 12, in which Jesus also claims to be greater than the Temple and the prophet Jonah.

Try to visualise the most healthy, prosperous, peaceful, righteous, and happy conditions on earth that you can imagine, and you will not be able to grasp even a fraction of what God's Kingdom holds in store.

As The Messianic King:

Solomon was the son of David, who built a physical temple and ruled a temporary earthly kingdom. Jesus identified as the ultimate Son of David who would make an eternal, spiritual temple and rule a kingdom without end.

Jesus is greater than Solomon in the wisdom He proclaims. Having written the Book of Proverbs, Solomon was a man known for his wisdom. Yet, despite all he knew, Jesus knew more. Solomon's wisdom about life, nature, and direction did not compare to Jesus's lordship over life and nature.

Solomon has no power over your hearts, but Jesus has.

The phrase "greater than Solomon is here," spoken by Jesus in Matthew 12:42 and Luke 11:31, is a direct claim to Messianic authority, asserting that Jesus is superior to King Solomon in wisdom, works, and significance. It signifies that while Solomon was the wisest and most glorious King in Israel's history, Jesus is the divine embodiment of wisdom and the tactual eternal King.
