A Gittite or native of Gath (the same city from which the giant Goliath came), Ittai, who was also a giant, was (in contrast to Goliath) one of David's chief captains and most faithful friends during the rebellion of Absalom (2 Samuel 15:11-22; 2 Samuel 18:2, 4, 12). The biblical account reveals self-sacrificing loyalty on the part of Ittai. He seems to have but recently left his native city and joined David's army through personal attachment to the king. David rapidly promoted him. Hearing of Absalom's rebellion and approach to Jerusalem, Ittai fled with David. David unselfishly urged Ittai to go back and join Absalom for Ittai's own benefit, However, Ittai absolutely refused to go back, but said he would stand by David until the last. David subsequently made Ittai a chief captain of his army, along with Joab and Abishai. No further mention is made of Ittai, and it is possible that he died in battle against Absalom's forces.
