I find it a curiosity that one million+ people travelled from Egypt to Israel, wandering for 40 years, and that absolutely no trace has been found of this exodus. Nothing in the way of tools, people or animal remains, has been unearthed. That fact seems impossible to me.
It goes to solidify, at least to me, that many of the Old Testament stories are allegorical in nature. This particular story could mean that when God is disobeyed, there will be consequences. In this case, a whole generation is erased from history.
