Punishment of ANY kind is not occurring 'modern day'. The Bible says that we are living during a time know as "the dispensation of God's grace" (Eph 3:2). God is temporarily withholding His wrath/punishment today. He is currently pouring out His grace. God poured out His punishment on Jesus Christ on the cross for all mankind for the forgiveness of all sin nearly 2,000 years ago. Those who believe this, the gospel of God's grace (1 Cor 15:1-4), will have eternal salvation and avoid His future wrath to come. 1Thes 5:8-11 "But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. 9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. 11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do."
