ESV - 24 A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 And he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors.

Their argument was motivated by sinful pride and their desire to be served rather than to serve, both of which were directly opposed to the mindset of humility that Jesus wanted them to have, which He modeled through His teachings on childlike faith (Mark 9:33-37), and His actions, such as washing their feet at the Last Supper (John 13:4-17).
