They show that through both His (apparent) royal paternal lineage (as given in Matthew) and His biological maternal lineage (as contained in Luke), He was descended from Abraham and David (as prophesied), while avoiding the curse that had been placed on the descendants of Jehoiachin (also known as Jeconiah or Coniah) in Joseph's ancestry (Jeremiah 22:29-30), since Joseph was not Jesus' biological father.
