Dear Anonymous: God gave us warning in His Word against such practices, and that is the only reason I can see for studying the topic.

The Lord warned the Israelites because these were the practices of the heathen nations that surrounded them. It has always been the will of God for His people to be holy as He is holy!

It is the same for us as born again believers in Christ Jesus. These things have been written for our admonition and we are to take heed to the warning! May I encourage you to read Romans 12:1-2, and additional scriptures in the Old Testament: Leviticus 18:21;19:31;20:6-7; Deuteronomy 18:10-14;
1Chronicles 10:13; Isaiah 8:19-22 and Isaiah 47:8-14. Finally, it is written in 2 Timothy 3:16-17, "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."

Anything outside of the Word of God, I would beware of!

Simple. God hates it. He warns in Micah 5:12,
NIV "I will destroy your witchcraft and you will no longer cast spells.

NLT I will put an end to all witchcraft; there will be no more fortunetellers to consult."

And we are to hate what God hates.

God further commands against witchcraft in Leviticus 19:26, 
"Never eat meat that has not been drained of its blood. "Do not practice fortunetelling or witchcraft." 

In Deuteronomy 18:10, we have: "Let no-one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practises divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft,"

Ga 5:19-20 say, "Now the works of the flesh are obvious,... idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions

Thus, it is a sin to avoid.

Dabbling in the sin of witchcraft or the occult leads to a lack of peace. You don't want that:

In 2 Kings 9:22 it says, "King Joram demanded, 'Do you come in peace, Jehu?' Jehu replied, 'How can there be peace as long as the idolatry and witchcraft of your mother, Jezebel, are all around us?'"

Practicing witchcraft could result in a demotion or falling out of God's will. The prophet Samuel told King Saul, "Rebellion is as bad as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as bad as worshiping idols. So because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has rejected you from being king." (1 Sa 15:23).

Do you really want to know how to anger the Lord? Then practice witchcraft: "He [Manasseh] sacrificed his sons in the fire in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, practiced sorcery, divination, and witchcraft, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the LORD, provoking him to anger." (2 Ch 33:6).
