On its website (islandecc.hk), the Island Evangelical Community Church describes itself as "a dynamic, English-speaking, international church in Hong Kong". It further says, "Founded in 1999 in Hong Kong, Island ECC has established a faith-based, international Christian church with ever-deepening roots in the community." Brett Hilliard, the church's pastor since 2001, was originally from Lubbock, Texas, and received a Master of Theology degree from Dallas Theological Seminary (a non-denominational evangelical institution) in 1996. He originally began his working life as an accountant, but was inspired to become a minister through his involvement in Campus Crusade for Christ. He and his wife have been married since 1989, and have four children and one grandchild. In 2010, he co-founded the Hope of the City ministry in Hong Kong, with the stated goal of "caring for the marginalized communities in Hong Kong, with an emphasis on transforming the city, one life at a time." In my search activities, I could find no negative indications or concerns about the church's teachings or activities from a doctrinal or secular standpoint, despite the return of Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China in 1997. (However, I also do not intend this post to be a personal endorsement of the church or its teachings.)
