As I see it, engaging in prayer or group worship as part of one's activities on the Sabbath would not have been considered "working" in the sense of violating the Sabbath (Luke 4:16). However, as Jesus indicated, such prayer (either on the Sabbath or any other day) was to be offered in a spirit of humility, and seeking forgiveness from God and communion with Him, rather than as a means of boasting (especially public boasting or "putting on a show") of one's own piety (Luke 18:10-14), or engaging in such prayer as a prescribed, ritualized, lengthy (Matthew 6:7) activity, with no thought given to its content, or to its relationship to one's own life or interaction with God.
