I can't imagine being instantly free of everything I know isn't right in my life.

I would express it by saying that it will be both the absence of sin (the root cause of everything that "isn't right" with life in this age and fallen world), as well as being eternally in God's presence, that will make the future state of the redeemed (whether in heaven or on the "new earth" spoken of in Revelation 21) perfect.
These 2 passages, Revelation 21:4 and Revelation 21:27, highlight two aspects of heaven's perfection: 1. Freedom from sin: Heaven is entirely free of sin, with evil, death, and Satan banished forever (Rev. 21:27; 20:10, 14; 21:8). Believers will be perfected, made like Christ (Phil. 1:6; 1 John 3:2). 2. Freedom from suffering: Heaven eliminates death, sorrow, and pain (Rev. 21:4). Sin's effects are gone, fulfilling the promise of victory over death (1 Cor. 15:54-55).
