Is David making excuses, saying "I'm only human" in Psalm 143:2?

Psalms 143:2
“And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.”

I can see how David's words might be construed that way, but, to me, he could also validly be interpreted as making a humble plea for God's grace (defined as undeserved mercy) based on honest acknowledgement of a spiritual truth. Considering the entire record of David's character as recorded in Scripture, my personal view would favor that second construction.
