Zimri was a prior king of Israel. He was a military official who had ascended to the throne by murdering King Elah, as detailed in 1 Kings 16. However, Zimri had no support from the army for his act of regicide, and he remained on the throne only seven days before he himself was deposed by Omri, who had the Army's backing.

Jezebel was likening Jehu to Zimri because of Jehu's role in overthrowing Jezebel's husband, the wicked King Ahab, who was the son of Omri. However, Jehu had been anointed king at God's direction to replace Ahab's royal line because of the evil nature of Ahab's reign. (The Bible twice describes Ahab as more evil than any of the other rulers of the northern kingdom of Israel (1 Kings 16:30 and 1 Kings 21:25-26).)
