I am reminded of the verse of Scripture in James 2:5 NKJV, that says, "Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?"

I believe that Jesus was speaking about them lacking material wealth according to the world's standards; however, they were rich in faith towards God, which means to totally depend on Him for everything that pertains to life and godliness.

How can believers be both poor and rich?

Revelation 2:9 – “I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich)…”

Believers can be materially poor yet spiritually rich because their true wealth is found in Christ Himself — the source of all wisdom, peace, and eternal life (Colossians 2:2-3). This was the main point of my pastor's sermon last Sunday on Revelation 2:8-11. It was good. He's so right!

God doesn’t measure worth by money, but by faith. Many who are poor in this world are rich in faith and heirs of His kingdom (James 2:5; Luke 12:15). Though believers may suffer now, they are being prepared for an eternal glory beyond comparison (2 Corinthians 4:17-18). Christ became poor so that we might become rich through His grace — not in possessions, but in relationship, purpose, and promise (2 Corinthians 8:9). Their treasure isn’t on earth, but stored in heaven, secure and everlasting (Matthew 6:19-20).

In summary, believers may be poor in the eyes of the world, but they are rich in Christ. They lack money, but possess mercy. They face rejection, but have eternal reward. Jesus told the suffering church in Smyrna, “You are rich.” And He was right.
