In my opinion, Jesus had dealt with the question before it had been asked, by saying in the prior verse that the world would know of Jesus' Lordship through the apostles' (and the disciples that they would subsequently gain in His name) obedience to God and Jesus' teachings.

Your question can be answered following Judas asking the question. John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, "If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him."

This can be understood even more when you read John 17. You’ll see Christ defines eternal life to those who possess the Father and the Son within them. This is how they would know him, but those in the world would not.
