Your question: What is the biblical significance of "choosing life" in a moment of grief and hopelessness? Choosing to live in the state you find yourself in will bring you righteousness from God. As Moses said, “And when all these things come upon you, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before you,” he was instructing the people to choose life and live, or the curse of not doing so would rest upon them. Moses’ writings were for our benefit. He was not speaking of himself but as he was given to say by the Lord. All the prophets, beginning with Moses, revealed God’s divine plan to redeem humanity, speaking as they were instructed by God. 2 Peter 2:21 states, “For the prophecy did not come in old time by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” We have witnessed life. Jesus is the embodiment of life. John 11:25: “Jesus said unto her, 'I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?'” The words Moses spoke about choosing life were referring to choosing Christ. Choosing to put your trust in God. The blessing in choosing life is to receive the righteousness of God by choosing to trust in his word. But when a person refuses to trust in him, they are cursed. All scriptures were written concerning Christ, even though many have tried to interpret the writings of the prophets by applying them to their era. All these things were written not only for their benefit but for ours also. God’s word is the living word to be applied to all generations.
