Why the command to "put off all such things" in Colossians 3:8?

For what reasons does Paul command the Colossian church to "get rid of your anger, hot tempers, hatred, cursing, obscene language, and all similar sins" (Col. 3:8)? And also to "lie not one to another, putting off the old man with his deeds" (Col. 3:9 JUB)?

I.e. On what are the commands in vv. 8-9 are based?
