Who is the writer talking to in Psalms 42?

In Psalm 42, the writer is actually speaking to several different audiences, and recognising the shifts makes the psalm much clearer.

He speaks to God

Much of the psalm is a prayer. He expresses his longing for God and asks why he feels forgotten. The psalm repeatedly portrays God as the one he desperately wants to be near.

He speaks to his own soul, or inner self.

This is particularly striking in verses 5 and 11, where he essentially challenges his own discouragement: Why am I so downcast? Put your hope in God. One scholarly commentary describes these refrains specifically as being addressed to the psalmist's “inner self”.

He recounts what his enemies say to him.

They taunt him with the question, “Where is your God?” Their words contribute to his distress.

So the heart of Psalm 42 is almost an internal conversation in the presence of God. The writer feels abandoned and deeply discouraged, but instead of simply listening to his despair, he talks back to it and tells his soul to hope in God.

This is probably the key to understanding the Psalm: his circumstances are speaking despair to him, but he deliberately speaks faith to himself.

Summary of the whole topic.

Psalm 42 portrays a deeply troubled worshipper longing for God’s presence. The writer feels spiritually thirsty, comparing his desire for God to a deer searching for water. His tears, separation from worship and the taunts of others intensify his distress. Yet he does not surrender to despair. He addresses his own soul, questioning why it is downcast and urging it to hope in God. He also speaks directly to God, honestly expressing feelings of abandonment while remembering God’s faithfulness and continuing to pray. The repeated challenge to his soul forms the central message: painful emotions are acknowledged without being allowed to determine his final outlook. Psalm 42 therefore moves between longing, grief, memory, prayer and renewed hope. Its central theme is perseverance in faith when God seems distant, choosing to trust that praise and fellowship with Him will return.

The writer is pouring out his heart to God during a time of discouragement. He is encouraging himself in the Lord.
