How should we defend restoring generic masculine nouns & pronouns such as "man of God" in translations?

I am using NRSVue which has "person of God" and NRSV " everyone who belongs to God" in 2 Timothy 3:17. The stylistic choice of avoiding the generic masculine "he, man" in Psalms and the whole Bible sometimes appears awkward and tone deaf.

What would be the best argument, with English scholarly sources, to use to defend restoring the generic masculine pronouns and nouns? Some good English editors or authors and scholars' references will be helpful because I can think of sending suggestions to such Bible publications.

2 Timothy 3:17

NRSV - 17 So that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.
