How should we defend restoring generic masculine nouns & pronouns such as "man of God" in translations?

My choice of version is the NRSVue which has "person of God" and NRSV " everyone who belongs to God" in 2 Timothy 3:17. Their stylistic choice of avoiding the generic masculine "he", "man" in Psalms makes the whole Bible sometimes appears awkward, mechanical and tone deaf. There are few reduction of "man" in the NRSVue, but overall it avoids the generic masculine. It is particularly notable in the Wisdom literature.

What is the strongest scholarly argument, supported by English-language sources, for retaining or restoring generic masculine pronouns and nouns in a Bible translation? I wish to send a well supported suggestion to the Bible publication for improvement. If more readers give them feedback they will improve it.

2 Timothy 3:17

NRSV - 17 So that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.

Michael, we are all entitled to our opinions; however, I personally don't see where the translations that you mentioned are a problem.

It is evident that the wording used "person" or "everyone" is talking about male and female. In Christ we are all one, therefore, there is no difference nor distinction between the two.

I believe the solution is simple, and in my opinion there's no need to argue! May I suggest that you use a different translation, if it bothers you that much.

Romans 12:18 says, "If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men." The Word of God is speaking to all, not just men.

I believe if you look at it from this perspective, there should be no problem.
