The world we live in has all the right ingredients for life and seems particularly suitable for man. It has the right temperature; not too hot or too cold, the right kind of gravity, the right amount of water, etc. Christians would say that the reason for this is that the world was created by God to be just perfect for us. Those who don't believe in God have a problem in explaining why we live in such a world so perfect to support life. However John Barrow, Archibald Wheeler and Frank Tipler came up with an alternative explanation. It is not possible to observe a world where life is not supported as there would be nothing alive to observe it. That means that not all physical worlds are equally likely. Only those worlds with human to observe them will be observed and by their very nature must be perfect for supporting life. This is the anthropic principle in its simplest and weakest form. It is designed to do away with the necessity of having to explain why the world is perfect to support and sustain life. It couldn't possibly be any other way, say Barrow, Wheeler and Tipler. Christians would agree with them but only because God made it that way. Regards Phil
