There is an old saying, out of sight, out of mind. When we forget to pray and forget to praise our Creator, then we can more easily slip into backsliding. "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour." (1 Peter 5:8) KJV On a website entitled ministry-to-children, I found the best statement I have seen yet about the power of staying true to the Father through praise--and prayer--the two being intertwined: "Memory Verse: 'Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the Earth.' Psalm 46:10 "Gospel Connection: This lesson is designed to teach children that God is bigger than any problem that they can face and any worry that they may have. We should take time to stop and praise God for His great sovereignty."
In the Bible sometimes God is praised for His inherent qualities. His majesty (Ps 104:1) or holiness (Isa 6:3) comes to mind, and He is "glorified as God" (Rom 1:21) in view of what He essentially is. More frequently He is praised for His works in creation, providence, and redemption. References may be dispensed with here, for the evidence meets us on almost every page of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and the Book of Psalms in particular, from beginning to end, is occupied with these themes. When God's operations under these aspects present themselves, not simply as general effects of His power and wisdom, but as expressions of His personal love to the individual, the nation, the church, His works become benefits, and praise translates into blessing and thanksgiving (Psalms 34; Psalm 103; Eph 1:3; 1 Pet 1:3). Besides, the Bible tells us in Psalm 117:2 -- Praise the Lord...because God’s faithful love toward us is strong, the Lord’s faithfulness lasts forever! (CEB) Praise the Lord...because ·the Lord loves us very much [L great is his loyalty/love toward us], and his ·truth [faithfulness] is everlasting. (EXB) Praise the Lord...because the Lord loves us very much, and his truth is everlasting. Praise the Lord! (NCV) We should be thanking God for His Attributes Deuteronomy 32:4 -- “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he." We should be thanking God for His Grace Ephesians 2:8 -- "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God," We should be thanking God for His Provision Acts 14:17 -- "Yet he did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.”
