Yes, its a cult.
Personally, I am not succumbing to the temptation of calling any church "names", nor label any church a "cult". But, like all churches, traditional, orthodox or mixture, they all have "strengths and weaknesses". Just read the 7 churches in Revelation and the background of members of churches "planted by Paul".
We are all students and do not have all truth; only God knows all. Let us just be thankful of the truth we were blessed "to see and hear" by the Spirit.
Let us not functionally "excommunicate" each other, like what happened during the era of Nicean Council between opposing factions of Athanasius and Arius.
No, we can go back further than Nicean, to Paul's day when he wrote, Galatians 1:8-12,
8 "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
9 As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that you have received, let him be accursed.
10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.
11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.
12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ."
There is no compromising, or comparing strength vs. weaknesses with Paul. Its his Gospel, given by revelation of Jesus or nothing. We can not pick and choose what we believe. We are commanded to believe the Gospel,
Romans 1:16
"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believes; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek."
Moroni (though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed) is the angel that Mormonism is named after!
I grew up with a Mormon friend and it made me want to study into why it is different. Joseph Smith was visited by an "angel" who said many untrue things. This angel said that in the true religion that they would become gods of their own worlds. Obviously, this was a lie. This "angel", I believe may have been a demon dressed up like an angel. We saw this same situation in the garden of Eden where Eve was deceived. She also was told that she would also become like God.
The devil wants to deceive many in thinking that the LDS are like Christians. But then they have a twisted take on the Bible. It all sounds good on the surface but the more one learns, you can see how the devil only comes to steal, kill and destroy.
Another thing mormons believe is that Jesus and Lucifer (Satan) are brothers but Jesus had a better plan of salvation. So that's how He became the Savior and satan's plan was rejected, which is how he became satan.
They are nice, good people and we should and do pray for their salvation through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
