What does the Bible say about angels?

The Bible describes angels as created spirit beings who serve as God's messengers, warriors, and protectors of believers. They are highly intelligent, powerful, and emotional beings who worship God and execute His will, sometimes appearing in human form. They are not to be worshipped but are fellow servants of God.

Biblical Teachings on Angels:

Nature and Origin: Angels were created by God, not born, and exist as spiritual beings, although they can take on human appearance. They are numerous, described as "thousands upon thousands".

Roles and Functions:

Messengers: They convey messages from God to humans; the word "angel" (malach/angelos) literally means "messenger".

Protectors/Ministers: They are "ministering spirits" sent to care for and protect believers (Hebrews 1:14), and Psalm 91:11-12 commands them to guard God's people.

Warriors: They fight spiritual battles and carry out God's judgment.

Worshipers: They continually praise and worship God in heaven.

Attributes: They are greater in power than humans but are not omniscient or infallible. They have free will, as noted by the fall of some angels (demons) who disobeyed God.

Limitations: Angels are subjects of Christ and are not to be worshipped (Revelation 19:10). They are sometimes mistaken for God but reject such worship, identifying themselves as servants.

Nature and Attributes

Created Beings: Angels are not divine; they were created by God, likely before the physical world. Unlike humans, they neither die nor marry.

Spirit Beings: They are primarily non-physical spirits, though they can take on human form to interact with people.

Not Human: The Bible teaches that humans do not become angels after death; they are of an entirely different order of creation.

Types and Hierarchy

The Bible identifies different ranks and types of heavenly beings:

Cherubim: Often depicted as guardians of holy spaces, such as the entrance to the Garden of Eden.

Seraphim: Mentioned in Isaiah, these "fiery ones" worship God at His throne and have six wings.

Fallen Angels: These are angels who rebelled against God alongside Satan (a fallen angel himself) and are now known as demons.

Do angels have individual names and personalities?

Yes. The Bible lists two angels: Michael and Gabriel. (Daniel 12:1; Luke 1:26) Other angels acknowledged that they had names, but they did not reveal them.—Genesis 32:29; Judges 13:17, 18.

Angels have distinct personalities. They can communicate with one another. (1 Corinthians 13:1) They have thinking ability and can compose expressions of praise to God. (Luke 2:13, 14) And they have the freedom to choose between right and wrong, as seen when some of them sinned by joining Satan, the Devil, in his rebellion against God.—Matthew 25:41; 2 Peter 2:4.

Do angels help people?

Yes, God uses his faithful angels to help people today.

God uses angels as he directs his servants in the preaching of the good news of the Kingdom of God.

Angels guide and protect those who are faithful to God.—Psalm 34:7; 91:10, 11; Hebrews 1:7, 14.
