To the surprise of some, "Christ" is not Jesus' last name (surname). "Christ" comes from the Greek word Christos, meaning "anointed one" or "chosen one." This is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew ...

Michael's answer is typically thorough but fails to mention one key point.

Both 'Christ' and 'Messiah' are transliterations (sounding like the word in another language)… NOT translations (providing meaning of the Greek (kristos) and Hebrew (mashiach).

By the time of Jesus, both the latter words had evolved to mean "The King"!

Why translators have stuck with the King James transliterations when they know the accurate, compelling, and far more powerful, actual translation, only God can knows for sure.

But, the real meaning of Kristos helps Jesus Followers better understand why the Romans plus the Jewish religious leaders murdered the Saviour of the world. It also explains why the sign over Jesus' head nailed to His cross used this title in the three languages of the day!

You can discover more about 'Christ' really meaning 'King' in Mr. Gorton's book which is reviewed on Goodreads at https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18039961-the-problem-with-christ.

Blessings all!

Christ means Jesus the Messiah the Anointed one and the Church.
The Bible says in
Galatians 3:29
And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Christ - means anointed one - in Jesus case anointed as God's Messiah over Israel - the Israel of God of which all believers have been grafted into in order to be privy to the promises made to Abraham. We as a part of the Commonwealth of Israel will co-inherit with the "seed" Jesus all the promises given in the Abrahamic Covenant.

Andy 3 photo Andy Mangus Supporter I am a Christian since October 1979 & devoted truth seeker.
My short and on point answer is this: Jesus is "The Anointed One! He IS KING OF KINGS! He IS LORD OF LORDS! HE is The Savior and our Redeemer unto Eternal Salvation by His Eternal Sacrifice at The Cross at Calvary!

"For IN CHRIST there is no condemnation! The very love of GOD surpasses all understanding!" "To Live is Christ"!

" Praise God that He provided a Savior! And, His name is Jesus Christ!"
