Eli was a priest who served at the Tabernacle at Shiloh during the last days of the judges and died when he was given the news regarding the Philistines capture of the Ark of God. Eli is best known for mentoring the prophet and judge Samuel. You can read all about Eli, his two wicked sons and the beginning of Samuel's life in the book of 1 Samuel chapters 1-4. It's a great read and one of my favorite books. :-)

He was an Israelite devout cleric whose children ended up so seriously that God killed them around the same time. His children were a disgraceful humiliation. They lured young ladies who helped at the love community. However Eli didn't do a thing to stop them but to request that they stop. They didn't. In opportunity a prophet accompanied astonishing news: Eli's children would kick the bucket on a solitary day, and nobody else in Eli's family would life a long life.

The fulfillment of this prophecy came when Eli was 98 years old, blind, and overweight--sat on a chair by the road, waiting for news of he battle. When it came, he fell backward off his chair, breaking his neck.
