A relic for a first century Christian is comparable to a movie memorabilia from the set of "The Passion of the Christ" to a 21st century Christian. We have to understand that our forefathers lived in a different time and had different culture. When a martyr dies, they take what they can to remind them of this dead martyr - a bone, a coat, a wood. The purpose of the relic is to serve as a reminder of that great story that men died for the faith, that we should follow their example, never betraying Christ even in the face of death. First century Christians kept these items like we would keep something we got from our deceased grandparents. We hold on to it, pray with it, knowing for certain that our grandparents in heaven are praying with us also. As for power, if one person prays for healing while touching a relic and gets healed, it is safe to say that God allowed healing to take place through a relic. To say that the power is not from God is unjustified.
