In my opinion, Christianity is not a religion but, rather, a movement. That the movement is as a sea does not make it any less a movement. It is a personal commitment to accept Christ as your personal Savior, to follow the commandments of God, and keep the testimony of Christ.
Even though a "religion" may evangelize and/or proselytize, it is still a personal decision that must be made by the individual to follow.
Mostly, in my opinion, this is because so few seek for the truth on their own and desire someone else to find it for them. We must steep ourselves in God's Word and come to know Him and His Nature personally.
It is said that the Bible is the best-selling yet the least read book. What a revealing statement that is....so sad.
Unfortunately, many choose to follow the "church" before Christ and churches, like corporations, have their own agenda, so one must be very careful to keep no thing between him/herself and our loving Savior.
No one can give to you the armor of God, you must personally accept it and put it on. No church can offer salvation, you must accept this free gift on your own from Christ alone. No other person or institution can repent of your sins, you must do this on your own.
The fact is, you are born alone, you die alone, and, if truly considered, you are alone all of your life as acquaintances of varying degree come and go.
I find that even the most well-intentioned "churches" fall toward apostasy through gluttony for money and will, if allowed, forget their flock in search of projects to increase their coffers.
It is as though they are trying to hoard people, stashing them away, as they look for fresh sources of revenue. So many good people have fallen or are left starving for Scriptural food because of greed exhibited by religious churches led by men instead of by the hearts of its constituents.
