A covenant is when a person says, "I am yours, you are mine." In the case of marriage, it is the man who makes the covenant with the woman. He says to the woman, "I take you as my wife." Interestingly, here, though God blesses the union, God is the audience. A covenant with God is an event when God takes Man and makes a pact with him, saying "I am your God, you are my people." A single man usually acting as high priest, becomes a representative of God's people. First time this happened was on the 7th day of Genesis, the first Sabbath, with Adam as high priest, representing the entire human race - at that time was only 2 people. Second time it happened was after the flood, with Noah as representative of God's people - at that time was a family of eight. 3rd time was with Abraham, the family grew into a tribe. 4th time was with Moses, the tribe has become a nation. 5th time was with David, the nation has become a national kingdom. Sixth time it happened was with Jesus, acting as high priest, representing God's people - not only the nation kingdom of Israel but the entire world.
