At that time John and the Pharisees were still observing practices from the Old Testament. These episodes of fasting took place during periods of mourning after the death of a loved one. The mourners wanted to devote themselves to mourning, not eating. In this case, Jesus was not dead. Mourning, suitable on other occasions, was not called for at this time. After the death and burial of Jesus, there was much mourning among His followers, replaced by joy after His resurrection. www.booksie.com/Don_Watson
