The new testament writers wrote in Greek. The old testament writers wrote in Hebrew. There are various words in the bible that refer to where Humans go when they die. They are: * Grave * Pit * Hades (Greek - the place where Humans go when they die) * Sheol (Hebrew - the place where Humans go when they die) Hades is the direct Greek equivalent of Sheol.
Sheol, translated as "grave", "pit", or "abode of the dead", is the Jewish underworld, a place of darkness to which all the dead go, both the righteous and the unrighteous. When the scriptures were translated from Hebrew to Greek, this word "Sheol" was translated as "Hades", the equivalent Greek underworld.
The pagan mythology of 'Hades' along with every other 'thought' containing any remote truth is being steadily 'Christianized' in obedience to the commands of the Holy Spirit: "For though we walk in the flesh, we do not wage battle according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the tearing down of strongholds, as we tear down speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ." (2 Corinthians 10:3-5). Pagan religious systems either wittingly or unwittingly worship 'demons,' (1 Corinthians 10:20-21). Like their master, demons are liars, thieves and killers, only able to attract men to systems of worship by 'stealing' truth, twisting it, distorting it and masquerading as 'messengers of light.' (2 Corinthians 11:14). If the Holy Spirit adopts a 'thought' also found in a pagan system, this thought has been 'liberated' like a prison of war. The 'speculative system' where it was bound is now destroyed, but the 'thought' was captured and 'brought under obedience'. It is now being 'renewed in the image of Christ.' This is an ongoing process that Christians work on like a project over generations. Every thought ever entertained by men will likewise be 'brought into obedience to Christ.' That is one succinct description of what Christians are actually doing here on earth. In the process, we are creating a 'victory train of liberated prisoners' as we march into heaven. "But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it says, “WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH, HE LED CAPTIVE A HOST OF CAPTIVES, And HE GAVE GIFTS TO MEN.” (Ephesians 4:7-8). These 'liberated thoughts' become 'gifts' from Christ, (our Victorious Champion), and we use the once inaccessible knowledge to further liberate the world around us. The destruction of the 'pagan' systems has led to unprecedented shared wealth and knowledge across all previous lines of race, ethnicity, birth class and gender, just as the Holy Spirit described would happen through His influence, (Joel 2:28-29). You will notice even the names of 'gods' have been 'Christianized' as well. Every time you see the word 'interpret,' 'interpreter' or 'interpretation' in scripture, it contains the word 'Hermes,' the demon once worshiped as the 'messenger of the gods.' The Holy Spirit preserves these words to remind us of Christ's victory over evil forces and to give each word a brand new 'meaning' that builds upon the once 'stolen truth.' The new words tell the whole story the way it REALLY is. This process is not complete. We ourselves must continue it today with literally every 'myth' or new thought that Satan unveils, including the atheism he is now using to conceal his existence and the existence of the same demons which once accepted open worship under false pretenses inside their pagan religious systems. Together, their work is now called the 'spirit of antichrist,' (1 John 4:3). 'Every thought' must ultimately be brought back under subjection to Christ. Then 'all disobedience will be properly punished,' (2 Corinthians 10:6).
