Obedience is important because it is a reward in this life and in the life to come. We are saved by faith alone in what Jesus did for us on the cross, that His blood sacrifice covers us from all sin. So to get first things first John 6:29 says we are to believe that Jesus is the Son of God that came to take away the sins of the world so that we might be saved through Him. Salvation from hell is a free gift of God, without works, but after we have received the spirit by accepting Jesus as our only savior, by faith alone, we do good works to earn rewards In heaven. And we also know that what ever we sow, that shall we also reap. All sin has a reward. Our good works also have a reward. We must always keep the two things separate, that salvation is without works, but rewards are from works. Our works could never save us, only Jesus blood sacrifice for all our sin can save us. So heaven is the reward of faith, without works, but after we are saved and have the Holy Spirit in us, we do good works because we are saved. Because Jesus saved us by grace, we can show grace to others and not pick on every little thing they do. We should forgive others there trespasses as God has forgiven our trespasses. We do what we do because we love God for saving us. Unbelievers do good trying to earn heaven by their works. Matthew 7:21-23 Many unbelievers do more good works than believers, trying to earn their way to heaven. But believers do what we do because we already are assured of heaven, and do good works because we love the one who saved us by grace. We obey God because he first loved us, and gave Jesus as our sacrifice for all sin. Jesus gave us two commandments. To love God, and love others. Doing those things will not save us, but after we are saved will be what God wants us to do. When we accepted Jesus as our only savior, every sin we have done, and every sin we will do has been paid for by Jesus. But we are not to use grace for a license to sin, but when we sin we have grace in time of need. Where sin abounds, grace much more abounds. If it were not for the grace of God, no one could be saved. It keeps us humble to know that only Jesus could save us sinners, and we could do nothing for it. We should obey God rather than men.
Why is obedience to God important? The simple answer is because God’s request for our obedience is the safest advice we can follow. Just like a parent, we request obedience from our children because it is for their own good. We discipline them because we love them and want to remind them of the danger their disobedience caused even if it is not apparent to them at the time. The same applies to God. (Proverbs 3:5-8) When we disobey God, eventually we will probably suffer a consequence not necessarily at His hand but because of what we did. However, because God loves us, He wants to protect us from such harm by disciplining us. (Hebrews 12:6) So, one reason to be obedient to God is to avoid immediate personal harm and possible discipline in the future. Another reason that adds to the blessing of obedience is that God rewards those who obey. (Hebrews 11:6) Even Jesus was rewarded for being obedient even to death on a cross. (Hebrews 12:2) So, from a practical viewpoint, we have everything to gain and nothing to lose in the long run for being obedient to God.
In addition to what's already been shared, I believe that obedience is important because it's our way of cooperating with God's plan for this world and for our lives. In the hymn "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty," these words demonstrate the significance of our cooperation: "Hast thou not seen how thy desires e’er have been, Granted in what He ordaineth?"
