Eternal life should be translated as age upon age lasting life or new age life. We have an earnest of that life now as followers of the lord Jesus as in him we participate in this world in a resurrection life attitude and power we receive from his spirit in us! 2 Cor:1:22: Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest [down payment] of the Spirit in our hearts. We should realize the in us through the lord Jesus resides the power that upholds the Universe. If we really realized this completely then we would accomplish so much more utilizing the power we have within because of him residing in us by his spirit. Indeed, we can do all things by and through the lord Jesus working in us by his powerful spirit that his God and his Father gave to him to give unto us. Everywhere the spirit is mentioned in the N.T. it is the spirit of our life giving spirit, the lord Jesus, accomplishing all that his God and his Father has commissioned him to do for us and through us! 2Co 3:17 Now the lord [Jesus] is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the lord is, there is liberty. 1Co 15:45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a life-giving spirit. John 3:35 The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand. Mr 9:23 Jesus said unto him, If you can believe, all things are possible to him that believe. So the life-giving spirit in us is the lord Jesus who is now an immortal glorified man seated at the right hand of his God and his Father, our God and our Father. So we have eternal life - new age life now residing in us. What are we doing with what God has given us to do with? Do we realize the power God has placed at our disposal through His beloved son Jesus. We should be going forth with increased faith and power to deliver to the world the life giving message that Jesus preached about the kingdom of God of which he will be the vice-regent of on this earth, seated on the throne of David at Zion. Let us rejoice that we have this resurrection life - new age life - age upon age lasting life - eternal life - through our being in the body of the lord Jesus God's anointed one, we in him and he in us! What amazing grace!
Jesus defined "eternal life" very clearly when He was first with us on earth as both fully man and fully God. It says He was that in God's New Covenant with all humankind in John 10:27-30. Jesus defines eternal life in verse 3 of John 17:1-3. You'll see above that, like most things our King said, the state God calls eternal life is easy to understand because it is a simple and straight forward truth. It is theologians and some Bible teachers who make understanding eternal life complicated. No one can earn eternal life by doing things to get it. (Ephesians 2:8-10) Eternal life is, however, readily available as God's free, "Good News" gift of blamelessness… but not faultlessness… before Him. (John 6:40) He makes it available to each human being who believes that Jesus, "God The Son" and "God The One & Only" bought and paid for it on our behalves by his death and resurrection from his grave. (John 3:16-18) We are promised this in Romans 10:8-12. And God The Father does not lie. (John 5:36) We enter into eternal life when God The Holy Spirit comes to live inside us at our invitation. (1 Corinthians 6:19) When He does, he makes us "brand new creations", not patched up ones. (2 Corinthians 5:17) And He does this the instant we believe plus turns our life into something special in "the dirty here and now". (John 10:10) And Believer's eternal life simply continues into the hereafter. Death is defeated once we believe. (1 Corinthians 15:55) In verse 46 of Matthew 25:41-46, Jesus contrasts His gift of eternal, abundant life, which only His Followers receive, with the horrible state that non-Followers inherit. You'll see Jesus says clearly their horrible existence also goes on forever …despite what some teach. If you do not believe in and know Jesus as your "cloaking device" from the fate of those who don't, please do not wait (John 5:24 & John 6:40) Exercise the simple steps in Romans 10:8-12 right now …please! Blessings all!
Jesus Christ is the fountain, i.e. the source of eternal life (1 John 5:11-12 See also John 11:25-26 – As the hymn writer put it, “He [Christ] lives, who died; he reigns on high; Who lives in him shall never die.” (see, too, John 14:6). Eternal life is a gift (Ro 6:23 -- See also John 6:27-- Jesus urges a crowd by Galilee's shore not to "work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you (Jn 6:27).; John 10:28; Romans 5:15-17; Ephesians 2:8-9 It cannot be attained by a being good person, and you can’t get eternal life by doing good. The Christocentric nature of eternal life is underscored by Jesus' own words in prayer on the night he was betrayed. First, he reminds the heavenly Father that he gave the Son "authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him" (John 17:2). Next, He furnishes a succinct description of what eternal life implies: "Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent" (John 17:3). Michael, above, makes reference to John 3:36, and I do, too: life eternal is a gift to all those who believe in the Son but will be withheld from all those who reject him (John 3:36). It is received by faith (John 3:36 --Faith in Jesus Christ, God's Son, is the ONLY way to gain eternal life. See also John 3:16; 5:24 -- In response to charges of Sabbath-breaking in Jerusalem Jesus urges listeners to heed his message and trust God; to do so is to have "eternal life." This means to escape from condemnation on judgment day and in the age to come. In the present it means a crossing over "from death to life" (John 5:24); Belief in Jesus is the only way that you will get eternal life (John 6:40; 20:31; 1 Timothy 1:16).
