Worldly wisdom is the collective efforts of human agencies that work in various ways that range from lone wolf doers and thinkers all the way to groupings of various sizes in diverse places. Certain truths often emerge, and end up getting wide dissemination. Many times fallacies end up being in the mix. Lone inventors, large corporate research facilities, all come into the total mix creating what could be termed present truth. A good example was the collective wisdom that informed the public that eggs were nature's most perfect food. Then, all of a sudden, that belief started to wane. It almost got to the point that you eat eggs at your own peril--unless, perhaps, you limit egg consumption to the whites only. The point is, worldly wisdom can often be a great help in the advancement of mankind; but present truth is not static. New discoveries, and new truths are always being uncovered. The Bible gives us tips on how to go about using an organized method of arriving at truth when new situations crop up. Perhaps the second bit of action--after prayer--is to seek a wise counselor: "The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge..." When we have prayed over an issue, when the answer is not readily apparent, especially when we are faced with some new wrinkle, it would be well to choose our counselor wisely. But be careful. The second half of the verse quoted above is, "...but the mouths of fools feed on folly." (Proverbs 15:14) ESV Perhaps the principle of relying on time tested information when seeking to solve problems using worldly wisdom will be readily apparent. Because, in addition to taking it to the Lord in prayer, one must continue to search the pages of the Bible to be well enough grounded to distinguish between good worldly wisdom, and codswallop!
