What did Jesus mean by "generation" in Mark 8:12?

In this passage Jesus refers to "this generation" as the generation that seeks signs from God, but we know that even today people desire signs from heaven that will prove God's existence. So, since people's hearts are seemingly unchanged, I wonder if we might be members of the generation that Jesus is addressing in this passage and throughout the new testament. Thoughts?

Mark 8:11 - 12

ESV - 11 The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him. 12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, "Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.

According to Strong's, the Greek word is ge-ne-ä'.

The outline of Biblical usage is :

I. fathered, birth, nativity

II. that which has been begotten, men of the same stock, a family

A. the several ranks of natural descent, the successive members of a genealogy

B. metaph. A group of men very like each other in endowments, pursuits, character

i. esp. In a bad sense, a perverse nation

III. the whole multitude of men living at the same time

IV.an age (i.e. the time ordinarily occupied be each successive generation), a space of 30 - 33 years

I believe The Lord was referring to the stock and progeny of those whom he was addressing, Israel, the Jews.
