To answer a very related question which had been merged with this one,
"What treasures are we to store in heaven? Matthew 6:19-20
What things are we supposed to store in heaven?" asked by Jayne:

Jesus said, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal."

What treasures are we to store in heaven? Righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness pursued in Christ (1 Timothy 6:11). -- "But as for you, O man of God, flee these things.
Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. These are the true riches that accompany eternal life."

Calvin notes that believers, knowing this life passes like a dream, “send forward their effects” to their eternal home through works approved by God—not as meritorious currency that purchases heaven, but as the fruit of grace that God graciously rewards (see also Luke 16:9)."
