This chapter in 2Peter is of course talking about the promised second coming of Christ and what will transpire at that coming. We discover that it belongs to the second coming of Christ by 2Peter 3:3, 4 here the apostle talks about those who mock at the long delay of the coming of Christ “where is the promise of His coming?” The next thing to note is that the mockers refer to the fact that the universe continues as normal “all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” So what was then expected with the coming of Christ was the end of creation and those mockers were ignorant of the fact that the one who upholds the universe would certainly come and when He does come that universe would then dissolve by the command of the Same “Word of God”. This universe is being kept as it is until the certain Day of Judgment. That day is called in 1Corinthians 15:23, 24, “The End” and in the parable of the Wheat and Tares it is called Matt 13:39, 40. “The end of the world”. Though this second coming return would seem to delay, it was indeed certain to come and with it would come the end of the universe. In fact from the language spoken in the latter portion of this Bible passage Peter spoke of the possibility that this “end”, may happen in the reader’s lifetime. 2Peter 3: 10-14,. Please note in 2Peter 3:14, The People whom Peter was writing to, were not looking for any kind of “Pre-Tribulation Rapture” They were looking for the Second Coming and with that coming the ending of the Universe and departure to the New Heavens and the New Earth. He was seeking to ensure that the readers were ready for this event so that they would be pure without guilt so they would “be found in Him in peace”. You may have heard of the movie “Thief In the Night” Well they got it wrong, because there will be no “Left Behind’s” in this event. When Jesus comes the Day of Judgment and the end of the Universe arrives. Some have suggested that this event is not the end of the world as a literal end to the physical world but simply the end of the “system of things” but if you note the Greek word for “earth” 2Peter 3:10 its “ge” pronounced “ghay” and is the physical globe not the so called “system of things” that shall be consumed by fire.
