What many forget is that the power is not in the water but God. Would he have been cleansed if he hadn't dipped seven times? No, the water wasn't the power, God was. The same goes for the new testament and baptism. The power isn't in the water but the blood of our Lord. Water does nothing to save us, but without it we have nothing. You could say it is the seal that puts it all together.

The story of the Syrian commander Naaman can be related to baptism: at the instruction of the prophet Elisha, the leper washed by submerging his body 7 times into the Jordan, and the disease diminished (2 Kings 5: 1-14). That may be understood as a symbol for the washing away of original sin through baptism.
