Why is 'You shall have no other gods before me' in the Ten Commandments - Deuteronomy 5:6-7

The command, "You shall have no other gods before Me" (Deuteronomy 5:6-7), stands at the very beginning of the Ten Commandments because it establishes the foundation of a person's relationship with God. Before giving instructions about conduct, honesty, marriage, or respect for others, God first addressed worship. Everything else in the Law flows from this one principle: God must come first in the hearts and lives of His people.

Before giving the command, God reminded Israel of what He had done for them: "I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage" (Deuteronomy 5:6). This is important because God did not begin with a demand but with a reminder of His grace. He was the One who had rescued His people from slavery, protected them, and led them towards the Promised Land. Israel's obedience was meant to respond to God's faithfulness rather than to earn His favour.

The command was especially relevant because Israel lived among nations that worshipped many gods. The Egyptians, Canaanites, and surrounding peoples trusted in idols they believed controlled nature, fertility, harvests, or military success. God called Israel to be different. They were not to divide their loyalty between the Lord and the false gods of the surrounding nations. They were to worship Him alone because He alone was the true God.

This command also teaches an important truth about God's nature. The Bible consistently declares that only one God is living and true. He created heaven and earth, is the source of life, and rules over all things. Unlike idols made by human hands, God is eternal, all-powerful, and worthy of complete devotion. Placing another god beside Him would deny His unique position and authority.

The first commandment is not only about physical idols. It speaks to anything that takes God's rightful place in our hearts. People may not bow before carved images today, but other things can become substitutes for God. Wealth, success, power, possessions, personal ambitions, or even relationships can become idols when we give them the trust, devotion, or priority that belongs to God alone. The command challenges every generation to examine where its deepest loyalty lies.

This commandment comes first because it supports every commandment that follows. When people honour God above all else, they are more likely to obey His instructions in other areas of life. A heart devoted to God will seek to honour His name, respect His laws, and treat others with justice and kindness. Throughout Israel's history, spiritual decline often began when the people turned away from God and followed other gods.

Jesus confirmed this principle when He declared that the greatest commandment is to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:29-30). Genuine obedience begins with wholehearted devotion to God. External actions matter, but God first desires the love and loyalty of the heart.

When I reflect on this commandment, I see that it reveals God's desire for a close relationship with His people. He does not seek a divided heart. He calls us to trust Him fully because He alone is worthy of worship and can truly satisfy the deepest needs of the human soul.

Therefore, “You shall have no other gods before Me” comes first in the Ten Commandments because it establishes Scripture's most important truth: God alone deserves our worship, trust, and obedience. When we give Him His rightful place, we can bring every other area of life into proper order.
