This is such a good question you are asking in that it is important to understand that a Christian needs to worship Jesus and when a Christian speaks of God, it needs to be in the perspective of the triune God of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. When you are worshiping Jesus, you are worshiping God as he is defined in Holy Scripture.

When a person says they are worshiping God, it could be a god as defined by man and not as revealed by Holy Prophetic Historical Scripture. Many religions of the world have one or many gods. We have one God and he has told us to worship him as Jesus. For instance, the Jehovah witnesses believe in God the Father but not God the Son.

When we worship Jesus we proclaim that we understand that according to Titus 2:13, Jesus is our Great Savior and Jesus existed before creation (Philippians 2:5-8). We see that our Father God calls the Son God, Jesus, God, in Hebrews 1:8. Jesus’ apostle John reveals to us that in the beginning was the Word and the Word was God and that he came to dwell among us. (John 1:1) Jesus is the Creator we are told in Colossians 1:16 and throughout the gospels we see that Jesus accepts worship in Matthew 2:11, Matthew 28: 9, 17 and John 9:38 and John 20:28 and even Luke 24:52.

The Holy Bible clearly teaches that we have a holy Creator, Righteous Savior God that exists in three persons. Father John 6:27 and Romans 1:7 and Holy Spirit Acts 5: 3-4 and the incarnated Son of God, Jesus Christ, who clearly says “Before Abraham was born, I AM” in John 5:58.

After his resurrection the disciples worshiped Jesus: Mathew 28: 9,17 and John 20:28 – 29 and Luke 24:52. Angels are instructed to worship Jesus in Hebrews 1:6.

In fact we are told in John 5:23 that “All men should honor the Son 'just as' they honor the Father. To fail to give this honor to the Son is to fail to properly honor the Father.”

So in short, to worship the Son is to give honor to the Father because it really shows that you understand the Triune God of the Holy Scripture and how he created us, separated himself to an incarnated representative of himself here on earth, encased in flesh, and yet completely deity and identified as the Son of God and the Son of Man. He paid the debt of our sins on the cross and conquered death because he was sinless, and therefore ascended into heaven, covering us with His righteous blood once and for all so that he could send God the Holy Spirit to live within us and guide us into all truth.

Blessings

I suppose the short answer is because God said we should. Hebrews 1:3 "Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high".

Hebrews 1:6 "And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him." v. 7 "And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire." v.8 "But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom."

Matthew 11:27 " All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him".
One cannot know the Father aside or independent from a knowledge of the Son.

John 8:42 "Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me."
One cannot claim to be a child of God if he does not love the Lord Jesus.

The Lord Jesus Christ is the personification of the eternal, spiritual God. In essence, God was made visible and put on display. Only by and through him can we know who and what God is.

John 14:6 " Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." The Father is unapproachable except through the Son.

Acts 4:12 " Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved".

There is one verse that I feel answers this question.

1 Timothy 3:16
"And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory."

I thank God for becoming flesh, my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit for giving me eyes to see who He is!

We should worship God the Father, not Jesus. Note these scriptures:

"Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. John 13:16

Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, `I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.' '' John 20:17

6. For who in the heavens can be compared to the Lord? Who among the sons of the mighty can be likened to the Lord?
7. God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, And to be held in reverence by all those who are around Him. Psalm 89 6-7

Jesus is telling us 'yes I'm the Savior but the Father is still greater than even I'. We are to worship God the Father and pray to God the Father. It is through Jesus that we are even allowed to come to God as we can now. It is the blood of Jesus that covers us and makes us right standing with God to step into His presence. So therefore through the salvation of Jesus that you receive you come to God in the savior Jesus' name to worship Him in righteousness.

God the Father, THE GREAT I AM is God of all. Jesus is God's Son just as Adam was God's son both created in God's image and likeness. We are to Worship Him. Jesus always pointed everything back to His Father and refused to be worshiped because he was only doing the will of his Father he did not come to be their god or king. There was already a God they just forgot about Him. They forgot about their first love.
