Jesus was speaking in reference Gentiles and Jews. The context of this discussion is the Centurion's faith. Though he was a Gentile, he had more faith in Jesus than many of the Jews in his time. "I tell you that many will come from east and west, and recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven" references Gentiles who will share in the Jew's inheritance, next to the patriarchs. "But the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness" is a reference to the children of Israel, who are suppose to inherit God's kingdom, but rejected Jesus, and therefor is excluded from it.
