I humbly submit that Antiochus IV Epiphanes [212-164 BCE] was a cruel and rash second century Greek-Syrian emperor who ruled the Jews from 175-164 BCE, with rabbinical sources referring to him as harasha ("the wicked"). Antiochus sided with the hellenized Jews to consolidate and strengthen his empire by outlawing Jewish religious rites and traditions kept by observant Jews, and also decreeing the worship of Zeus, (king of the hellenistic pantheon of gods). Profaning the temple in Jerusalem by placing an image and then rededicating it to Olympian Zeus.(Daniel 11:31; Daniel 12:11) They also brought into the temple things that were forbidden, so that the altar was covered with abominable offerings prohibited by the laws of God.(Zeus offering, a pig) (Matthew 24:15; Mark 13:14; Luke 21:20) Remembered as a major villain and persecutor in the Jewish traditions associated with Hanukkah. In the space of three days forty thousand souls met a violent death with a like number also being sold into slavery.
