I don't know if my answer should be posted as an answer or a comment to Mr. Houdmann' excellent answer. I will leave that to the administrator.

Some years ago, maybe after watching the movie "Independence Day" or maybe after reading some other fictional story, I don't remember, I looked at this question as an end times possibility : What if Satan showed up as an Alien in a spaceship that was stationary above the Whitehouse? What if he promised us unlimited energy, advanced medicine for longer life spans and a three day work week due to their advanced technology? And told us that all we had to do to get these things was desolve our government and pledge allegiance to him. What would America do? As this was several years ago, I thought that the America of the past, say of the 1950's or so due to patriotism and national pride as well as the warnings they would hear from their churches would have no part of it but I didn't know about the America of that time (whatever year it was).

But as time has gone by and we have been conditioned by movies, other fiction, TV etc., plus the fact that so many have seemingly turned away from God, I am afraid that the majority of Americans would now say where do I get in line to sign up.

Matthew 24:24 could happen anytime.
