In order to understand 1 Peter 4:1, you must go back to 1 Peter 3 and especially from verses 18-22, which speaks of Christ suffering for our sins and dying in the flesh, and also the picture of baptism of us being dead to sins and raised to newness of life. For as we die to our fleshly nature we are then willing to live more for God. The battle of every Christian is to die to the nature of their flesh, and live in the will of God.
