Daniel 1:8 - 14
ESV - 8 But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king's food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself. 9 And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs.

First of all, I would go to the chapters in Daniel that specify what Daniel and his companions ate and didn't eat during the time of their fast. Knowing what is allowed and not allowed for consumption on such a fast are key. Second, I would stipulate the reasons for the fast. Fasting should always be done for a clear purpose. What are your reasons for fasting? What do you hope to accomplish during the time of the fast? How do you want to see God lifted up? How do you hope to see Him answer your prayers? Third, I would set up some kind of system for accountability. If your group is doing a fast, then it makes sense to hold each other acountable to the parameters of the fast. Last, grant grace to make room for the "spirit of the law." If some people need special accomodations (such as people who take medications, are allergic to certain foods, or who are diabetic), then grant grace in such situations. Don't make it a matter of religion, but a matter of the heart and desire for God's glory. Bottom line: Fasting with others is a great way to connect in a deeper way with other believers and to explore the depths of commitment to God and prayer. Do all you can to make it meaningful and valuable to God and to all involved.
