There are many activities which are ritualistic and both commanded by God and some not so. Examples are in Exodus 9:8 in the dreadful signs performed for Pharaoh, Exodus 29:20 in the consecration of the priests. One would ask why touch the right ear, right thumb and right toe with the blood of the ram or other examples are found in the cleansing ritual in Leviticus 14:49-54 . We cannot rationalise all these things because they are not easy to explain medically, logically or scientifically. God, in his sovereignty and for his pleasure does reveal some matters to us but there are many more matters that he chooses to keep to himself. Deut 29:29- The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law. Where a matter in scripture remains unrevealed throughout the tenor of the bible, we must be content to say we do not know why a matter was handled as it was. We risk digging ourselves into miry holes of explanations and justifications if we try to rationalise those things our God has decided to remain silent about. Other places where it is made clear that there are indeed secret things which our God may choose to reveal to us or keep them to himself are Dan. 2:22, Matt. 13:35
