Let us study wife of Moses in detail: ✿ Wife of Moses was Zipporah and she was the one and only wife of Moses. (Ex. 2:21) ✿ Moses loved his family and was faithful in all his house (Heb. 3:2). ✿ Zipporah was a Midianite, a daughter of the priest of Midian (Ex. 2:15-25; 3:1; 4:18-26; 18; Num. 10:29-36; Judg. 1:16; 4:11; 1Sam. 15:6). ✿ Marriage proposals usually came from the groom's parents, but sometimes the custom was reversed (Ex. 2:21) like in David’s case 1Sam. 18:27. ✿ Zipporah’s father Jethro was called Reuel in Ex. 2:18, Raguel in Num. 10:29 and Hobab in Judg. 4:11. He was chief of a large tribe and exercised the priestly functions for his people, as did Melchizedek (Gen. 14) and Job (Job 1:1-22). ✿ Both Moses and Zipporah were descendants of Abraham. The land of Midian in Arabia was the land of Cush (grandson of Noah) as well as Ethiopia because one branch of Cush settled there in ancient times. Midian was a son of Abraham through Keturah (Gen. 25:1-4). Therefore, Moses married a descendant of the son of Abraham, not an African as some think. ✿ She was simply a Cushite because she dwelt in the land of Cush, in the same sense that a German or an Italian immigrant becomes an American because of citizenship. Just as being American has no reference to race, so being a Cushite did not identify Zipporah in this way. ✿ Some say Zipporah was a second wife of Moses, but we have no grounds for this supposition. ✿ Zipporah bore two sons of Moses. They are: ❶ Gershom, means a stranger (Ex. 18:3; 2:22; 1Chr. 23:15-16; 26:24). ❷ Eliezer, means God my helper (1Chr. 23:15-17). ✿ Zipporah tried to avoid the circumcision of her son Eliezer. One their way to Egypt, they stayed at a rest area (inn) for the night by a watering place, not necessarily a hotel (Gen. 42:27). God seems to have come physically to kill one of Moses' sons because she had neglected to circumcise him. It was a promise to Abraham that the uncircumcised male would be cut off (Gen. 17:14). God was acting to deliver Israel through Moses. So, it was necessary to enforce the letter of the covenant. Zipporah, understanding why God sought to kill the boy, took a knife and circumcised him to save his life. She cast the foreskin down at Moses' feet, and God let the boy live. ✿ Zipporah was sent home after the experience at the inn (Ex. 4:24-26), and reunited with Moses in the wilderness of Sinai (Ex. 18). Bible scholars estimates that this reunion comes shortly after few months. ✿ A further passage referring to Moses’ sons is 1 Chronicles 23:14-16: “Thus, Moses’ sons were ranked with the Levites generally, but not introduced in to the distinctive portion of the descendants of Levi who were appointed to the special functions of the priesthood.” This proves that Moses ruled so unselfishly that he made no special provision for his own sons in Israel.
The Bible does not say much about Moses' wife, Zipporah. We know that she was the daughter of a man called Jethro (or Reuel), who was a priest in the land of Midian (Exodus 3:1; cf. 2:18). The Bibl...
