Dear Anonymous, I believe the first thing we need to do is consider what Paul wrote in verse 3.
"For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God."

We are to reckon that we are dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. As stated in Romans 6:11.

The apostle wrote in Romans 6:3, "Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?"

6:4, "Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life."

6:5, "For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin."

The things that he mentioned in verse 5 are the works of the flesh. These are also mentioned in Galatians 5:19-21. And, acccording to Galatians 5:24, "And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires."

So we put these desires of the flesh to death by walking in the Spirit. Galatians 5:16 says: "I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh."

We put them to death by the renewing of our minds. Colossians 3:9-10 tells us, that since we have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.

I believe it happens through yielding to the Holy Spirit, and denying the flesh.
