This verse in Exodus occurs in the context of the Feast of the Unleavened Bread. Deuteronomy chapter 17 gives an explanation of the various special days commanded by God. Exodus 13:6-10, "Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the Lord. Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days. And no leavened bread shall be seen among you, nor shall leaven be seen among you in your quarters. And you shall tell your son in that day, saying This is done because of what the Lord did for me when I came up from Egypt. It shall be as a sign to you on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, that the Lord's law may be in your mouth; for with a strong hand the Lord has brought you out of Egypt. You shall therefore keep this ordinance in its season from year to year." Deuteronomy 6:8, "You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be like as in front of your eyes." The Jews took this teaching in a physical way. The men were to wear boxes containing passages of Scripture. Matthew 23:5, But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their garment borders and tassels large and showy. Referring to the Pharisees. The Jews would fasten Scripture to their hand and forehead during prayer as a memorial. It was representative of an internal reality: God's instructions were to become a rule for one's life. God's law should be close to the heart and mind of every believer, always. Proverbs 3:3, "Let not MERCY and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.(vs.4) And so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man." Proverbs 6:21, "Bind them continually upon your heart; tie them around your neck." May we as believers be ever mindful of God's love and mercy, and strive to honor Him with our whole being!
It means an illustrative way to tell the believers and followers of God, a kind of close relationship of the Israeli people with God, should be based in loving God (Deut.6:1-25; Matthew 22: 37-38), as Jesus also told us that He is the true vine and we are the branches (John 15: 1-17). What an amazing grace!
