Looking at this verse in context, we notice that men began to call upon the name of God. In Zephaniah 3:9, we read " For then I will restore to the people's a pure language, That they may call on the name of the Lord, to serve Him with one accord." We will worship God with our words given to Him. I think of prayer as a special time of drawing close to God personally. A time of communion with Him. A time of worship, sharing. In that thought, I am taken back even further in the book of Genesis. In 2:16, God gave a command to Adam.. We are not told of Adam's response, if there was one. But move on to Genesis 3:9, God calls, and Adam answers they are having a conversation! They are communing together! So I suspect that, even though we are not privileged to the information, prayer between Adam and God began even before this.
